Saying “Yes” to God is the door that opens up your mind to the truth. Many people wander their whole lives in the dark – not knowing what is true and what is sham. Choosing to do God’s will, turns on the light. Truth and error become obvious.
Jesus taught as much in John 7:17 when he said, “If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.” Submitting to God comes before discerning truth.
Some cult groups say that a person only needs to read their literature and then he will know whether it is true or not. Not so, Jesus.
Jesus says that if a person makes a prior commitment to do God’s will, then that person will be able to discern truth from error. Commit first … know second.
We shouldn’t be surprised that faith in God comes prior to knowledge of the truth. All people know by nature that God exists and that he is majestic. Faith is responding to that truth by believing that God not only IS, but that he is also a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. So, faith leads a person to the commitment to do God’s will, whatever it is. Before he knows what it is.
