Wow! Look at these great truths from God’s word originally written to the Christians at Colosse!
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.” Colossians 2:6-8
The difference between the old life and the new life is where my dependence lies. Do we depend on a religious system, wise teachings and the like? Or do we depend on a person, knowing that our personal relationship with HIM makes for true life.
Yes, we teach wisdom – the truth of “how life works.” But we have given up depending on such wisdom to give us victory over sin.
Our dependency is now on Christ Jesus. He protects us. He guides. He encourages. He gets us out of the jams of life.
But how is the result different?
The way of religious philosophy is the way of bondage (captive), which looks so right (deceptive) yet does not truly change me on the inside (hollow).
The way of Jesus Christ is very different. It is described as stable (rooted), growing (built up) and resulting in real confidence (faith).
Depending on religious principles results in an incomplete, never quite good enough, life. Depending on Jesus Christ and growing in our knowledge of him leads to an accomplished, full life (overflowing with thankfulness).
