The word “gospel” as used by Paul refers to the life and message of Jesus Christ. Paul preached about Christ and called that the gospel. “Gospel” is better represented by the gospel of Luke than by the Romans road. The following shows how this understanding fits into the book of Romans.

Verse Text Notes on Meaning of
Rom 1:1-2 Paul, a servant of Christ
Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel
he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures
Gospel is explained in verses 3-4. Subject is the Son. Specifics
include his human ancestry and divine nature, proven by the resurrection and
the Spirit of holiness.
Rom 1:9 God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you Gospel is “of his Son.”
Rom 1:15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who
are atRome.
Why anxious to preach gospel if Romans already knew the Gospel? Answer
is in verse 16.
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel,
because it is the power of God for
the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the
Jesus said that knowing him was eternal life. Thus, knowing the gospel
of Christ is the appropriate vehicle for sharing eternal life.
Rom 1:17 For in the gospel a
righteousness from God is revealed, a
righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written:
“The righteous will live by faith.”
The righteousness demonstrated in the gospels is forgiveness and
growing personal holiness for all who followed Christ. Jesus declared that
one believing him had crossed over from death to life and will not be
condemned (John 5:24).
Rom 2:16 This will take place on the
day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
Jesus declared that he would be judge (John 5:22).
Rom 11:28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies

Rom 15:16 to be a minister of Christ
Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles

all the way around to Illyricum, I have
fully proclaimed the gospel of
The gospel is about Christ.
Rom 15:20 It has always been my ambition
to preach the gospel where Christ
was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.
If Christ is known, foundation has been laid. If Christ is not known,
gospel is new. Christ is the content of the gospel.
Rom 16:25 Now to him who is able to
establish you by my gospel and the
proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery
hidden for long ages past,
“My gospel” is described as “the proclamation of Jesus Christ.”
